Type 202 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel which was developed to conserve nickel. Type 201 is a lower cost alternative to conventional Cr-Ni stainless steels such as 301. 202 stainless steel is a low-nickel high-manganese stainless steel with a nickel content and a manganese content of about 8%. It is a nickel-nickel stainless steel.

The annealing temperature for Type 202 is between 1050~1080°F. Rapid cooling through the carbide precipitation range (1500 – 800 o F) is necessary to keep the carbides in solution and prevent sensitization. Type 202 is not hardenable by thermal treatment; it is only hardenable by cold working.
Type 202 is made of high-precision automated pipe-making equipment, which is formed by self-etching and welding, roll forming, and filled with gas protection (inside and outside the pipe) without any metal filling. The welding method is TIG process and online solid solution eddy current flaw detection.
Type 202 is resistant to a wide variety of mild to moderately corrosive environments. It has corrosion resistance approaching that of Types 301.
